First Encounter with My Landlord

Today, I decided that I don't really like my landlord very much. I know I am breaking my once a month trend, but whatever, I just felt like venting a little.

I mean before I was kind of apathetic, since I didn't really know the guy, but now I can firmly say, I don't really like him. Anyways, here is my story:
This afternoon, I did some studying, and some other stuff. After getting off the phone with my friend, and arranging to eat dinner with him and a group of people in another hour and a half, I still felt a little tired, so I took a nap on my sofa.

An hour later, I woke up with this somewhat aged, white-bearded, thin man standing over me. I am a little confused, and groggy. He talks to me cheerfully.

"Hello? Hello? Hi, I am here to show some people the apartments. I put a notice on your door this morning at 8:30. Did you see it?"

"I'm sorry, no."

"So you did not leave your apartment all day?"

I didn't really have a reason to leave my apartment today. I had leftovers in the fridge for lunch, and I didn't have any errands to run this weekend.

"No, I didn't."

"Oh, well, I am showing some people your apartment today, they may move in next semester."

Wait... so you woke me up for this? Couldn't you see that I am sleeping? You could have at least slipped the notice under the door.

So, immediately after that, four girls walk in behind him. He turns to them.

"Hey this guy didn't leave his apartment all day. He just slept." (laughs)

I kind of like how he refers to me as 'this guy'. Names aren't important as long as you have a number to tag on them.

I felt a little awkward, and he just laughed at me for staying in my apartment all day, or assumed that all I do is sleep (Man swift justice should come in the form of lightening). I didn't know what to say after that, I mean, he is my landlord right? So, I assume I should be respectful and let him do what he needs to do now. I really want to kick him out, but well, he is my landlord right?

So, after that, I didn't talk much. He basically came in, showed them the rooms, and then decided to show them my room in particular. In fact, of the 4 bedroom apartment, with only one bedroom actually occupied, he decided to choose my room to sit in to talk to them about the state of the apartment, and answer other questions they had.

I called up my friend to tell him I would be late, because really, these people are just strangers to me, and I don't want to leave them here with just all my stuff lying around. I really didn't have time to clean up, or put my checkbook and other items in a more secure place. I am sure they wouldn't take my stuff, but having strangers just in my apartment makes me feel a bit uneasy.

So they continued to talk for about 45 minutes, and walk around the apartment, poke around and all. I was pissed.

I tried not to pay attention to them most of the time, but still kept an eye out to see what they were doing.

After they finished, the landlord, still cheerful, says to the girls, "Well, I guess we should let the tenant get back to his nap."

He turns to me and says, "Thanks for letting us look around."

Yeah, thanks for learning my name and respecting my space you asshole.

I ended up not eating with my friend, mainly because they spent so much time in my apartment that by the time I left, the group of people I was suppose to meet up with already finished eating.

I was pissed. I didn't even get a proper apology out of this. Why are people such a disappointment?

My Summer

Well, I have been living in an apartment in champaign, and programming for this professor, while I do some personal studies. That is essentially my summer in a nutshell. The weather has been real nice, its not too hot lately. Although, the past week it was blazing hot, 90 to 95 degrees, though feeling like at least 100 because of the humidity.

I live in a four bedroom apartment by myself. I don't see people around as often as I would like to. I guess it is 'cause we don't all live together that close. I should put more of an effort to visit, though I guess I am afraid of making people feel like I am clingy. It has been awhile since I had a roommate I guess.

I live in a single now. My roommate went home. He decided to take the semester off.

So this is the second week I have been living by myself.

It isn't so bad. I enjoy the privacy, though it was definitely a lot more fun with him around.

School is getting tougher. Less credits, I am taking 4 classes, but they are a real handful, especially CS 273, discrete mathematics.

I think life has been pretty fulfilling lately. I am happy with where I am, and I can enjoy life, even though it is pretty busy.

Oh, and Happy Chinese New Years.

Be sure to eat rooster or something, or chicken. One of the few Chinese Zodiac animals you can eat.

Well, its another [lunar] year. Turning over a new leaf? Well did that Jan. 1st, though can't hurt to do that again.

Current thought on my mind? I am turning 20 in less than a month. Feels like a big jump, I mean 19 to 20. Twenty even seems like a much bigger number than 19. It feels like I should have some sort of revolution in my life.

I guess I could give it til my actual birthday comes up. Maybe I will post again after I turn 20. That will break my 1 post per every few months pattern though.

Wow I have not written in this in about... I don't know a zillion years. I guess my mind has been occupied by a lot of things. Ah I never feel a real need to write it down when I have it all up in my head.

Well, school is busy as usual. I am studying a lot, and doing a lot of work, as a matter of fact, working pretty hard.

Though, you know, I still cut loose a bit. Okay, not cut loose as often or that much, but just a bit. I am... pacing myself. Enough to be enjoying my life right now, but not so that I am indulgent.

At this time, I was a bit concerned about things in my life. You know mistakes I have made and such and such, and ways I can improve on myself.

You probably heard something like this before, though hearing it and learning it are two different things, and the difference between the two is one comes from experience. So here goes:

The past doesn't matter, it really is where you are now. Living in the past only sucks the life out of living in the present. Living in the past is like not living at all, and life is too short to waste any time. Life is really to short to waste time being anything less than content.

This is a little unpolished, so I will try to explain it a little. I realize that I write a lot of stuff, and sometimes I try extremely hard to make things look good so that I won't offend anyone or have people look at me badly. Which brings me to my current concern, that people would think that I am supporting the fact that mistakes can be overlooked. So let me clarify and think about how to make this as succinct as possible.

Who you are not is a result of what happened in the past. You should be concerned about who you are now, and improve on that, but not be concerned about who you were. A person can still be content with life, but seek to improve.

I guess that is pretty much it. Ah, I am trying to say the most out of saying the least. Anyways, just something I thought I would share.

REFLECTION:

On a sidenote, yesterday I went to the Better Luck Tomorrow panel and listened to 3 of the actors talk about the movie. I thought it was a good experience and it was interesting to hear what they had to say.

Anyways, school is tough, and it is getting rougher with finals coming along. It feels like things are getting desperate and the tension with finals is already heavy in my atmosphere. I am a bit worried about where I am going to be and what I am going to do. Right now, I am a computer science major, and for one thing, it sure does not feel like a very comfortable place to be. I heard that I really haven't gone deep into comp. sci. to really know what it is like, but when I reach the point where I have, I already pasted the point of no return.

So anyways, further reflection of my year. In retrospect, I don't think I assimilate well into society in general. I mean, I feel like I am my own individual. Course you can say that for everything. Though, let me see... I feel more like a piece of the 1000 piece puzzle that does not fit anywhere at all. Sort of like a manufacturers accident. The puzzle is complete, and for some reason their are pieces left that don't belong anywhere at all. Have no purpose. Though, I feel well at home here. I think things have really changed in the past year and I didn't really notice until I turned around and saw just how far I walked.

I use to feel very alone, but it seems like I didn't just make a few friends, but I made a lot of close friends, and it all doesn't seem so bad when I look back on things.

I have this mindset, even now, that I want to do everything on my own. I don't like to have people do things for me. I want to be independent and self-sufficient. It makes me feel more accomplished, more of a person, and it makes me feel strong. Mostly the latter. I think I learned to try to live like that for awhile, but then I realized that there is no such thing as strong. Sure, I have been told that and all, but hearing it and knowing it are that different. I guess life is too heavy of a burden to carry by myself, and I am that much weaker than I thought I was strong.

So this year, I can't accredit myself for going this far by myself. A lot of people gave me a heave or a shoulder up on things so that I can get to where I am. I feel kind of sad that the summer is coming. I use to always look forward to it, but this year, I guess it doesn't seem quite as welcoming as I hoped it would. There are a lot of people I just met and I was hoping I would get more time to get to know them.

CHRISTIANITY

Lately, I have been having doubts about my faith. I recently had this old friend who basically turned from Christianity. We use to be real good friends before I simply did not see him much anymore. When I knew him, he was probably one of the strongest Christians I knew. I guess time changes everything. Though in my own life, I find it a bit difficult to be a Christian, and now, I don't even know if I have what it takes to be a good Christian. I spend my whole life grounded on my faith, and was active in my church. Though now, it seems that a lot of the Christians around me simply don't feel like real Christians. What does it mean to be a Christian?

1) Love God. - I know that it is "Love God with all your heart and all your strength" essentially "Love God with everything"; however, I don't plan on repeating what every Christian would say. Why? Because reading and memorizing from books doesn't mean anything. How you know you integrated something into your life is that you show it, don't say it.

2) Love People. - Your neighbors is everyone else. That is the ultimate way of loving God, by loving his creations. The 10 commandments have a strong basis in how people should respect others and God. I will not name them out, even though I can. If you want me to recall them by the Bible, you can ask me; however, I believe that every person knows the ten commandments in some form or another. They know what is right or wrong, for that ability is innate.

3) Humble Yourself Because You are a Sinner, just like everyone else.- Let people step on you. Know that you are not superior to people but as a servant of God you are lower than everybody else, because you are a sinner. Most importantly because you are a sinner. This ties into the first and second, because if you can humble yourself, it lets you put urself into the position where u can love people the most, and then at the same time praise the Lord with your heart.

These are what I believe makes a true Christian. It doesn't say know the Bible as you know the back of your hand. It doesn't say go to youth group all the time and participate in all the church activities. It doesn't say don't go see movies, and don't go to social events. The Bible talks about seperating yourself from the world in values, and also the Bible never values a Christian life based on Bible knowledge; however, reading the Bible is a healthy way of keeping a person accountable. People want to know why I don't go to this church in my college. For two reasons:

1) Many of the people there are not the type of Christian I am looking for. Either they are too dressed in the stereotypical Christian image and lack the heart of Christianity, or they lack both.

2) In an atmosphere that yearns for the stereotypical Christian image, and with myself facing doubts, I feel that the environment would deter me more than help me.

I want to find Christians who have the heart of a Christian. I want to meet Christians who feel like people instead of Hero-Pastor-Christian-with-Heathen-Rebuking-Action. I am tired of meeting people like that. I want to meet people who know they are sinners, and have a heart to love people. I think that is what would help my spirit, to know how people like that can get through with the same type of difficulties as I am, because right now, I think I am beginning to get sick of being stepped on all the time, and having people point fingers at me all the time, like my parents. I think I am sick and tired of trying to be nice, and trying to be patient all the time. I find it harder and harder to think of others than myself.

FILM

I recently had this assignment in Rhet105. I had to go with a group of people to the Krannert Art Museum, pick out a painting, and analyze it. Now, I am somewhat of an artistic person, at least I like to think that. I occassionally do a few sketches here and there, though all of them are cartoony stuff. I guess that doesn't necessarily justify art, but you know what I mean. I mean. I think I can appreciate art. So I was thinking, it struck me because I found this website with all these movie scripts and I found some of the scripts to be rather poetic.

So I guess being in Rhet105 and then going to go see paintings and then finding the website all mixed together. Literature, painting, and film. When I was at the Krannert Art Museum, I was lookin at this painting called "Wall Street" and as I was looking at it, it seemed as if the artist wanted to capture a scene. I mean not just a picture. It seemed the people in the city were almost moving. After looking at a lot of the paintings made in the 1800's , 1400's, ancient times and whatnot, it crossed my mind that maybe, just maybe, that if those artists were alive today, they maybe a bit envious of all the people who could actually make those scenes that they tried to animate in a portait come to life in film. At least, if I were a painter, and I found out that say 300 years later some people could actually do what I was trying to do in my painting, I would be a lil bit ticked off.

Of the scripts I looked at, I looked at the Shawshank Redemption more closely. I really like this scene (for the people who have not seen the movie, I may recommend not reading this and just skip down, though it may not necessarily spoil anything in my opinion):

I am pretty sure a lot of people can sympathize with that feeling, which is why the film is so powerful. Film can have dialogue more powerful than a play and a poem combined and have colors and atmosphere more powerful than a painting. Yet, I feel that a lot of the film industry just doesn't quite use this potential to make film into what it can really be.
